The researchers behind this new study wanted to develop meaningful applications from this technology. Tasnim and Stroulia have recently presented their findings at the Canadian Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA, have published their findings in a paper in JAMA Internal Medicine.

During the study, the investigators studied the association between diabetes risk and healthful plant-based diets that involved a high amount of healthful fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and nuts.

The team found that following plant-based diets were linked to a 23% lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

“Overall, these data highlighted the importance of adhering to plant-based diets to achieve or maintain good health, and people should choose fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, tofu, and other healthful plant foods as the cornerstone of such diets,” senior author Dr. Qi Sun said.

During the study, the investigators also assessed other common individual cancers including breast, ovarian, lung and prostate cancers.

They found no significant relationship between how many cups of coffee a person consumed and if they developed any form of cancers.

Researchers said that consuming coffee per day neither reduced nor increased a person’s risk of developing any cancer. In short, drinking coffee does not change a person’s risk of being diagnosed with or dying from cancer.

QIMR Berghofer lead researcher, Jue-Sheng Ong said that more research is needed to clarify whether there is any link between colorectal cancer and coffee.

Mr Ong said, “There was some inconclusive evidence about colorectal cancer, where those who reported drinking a lot of coffee had a slightly lower risk of developing cancer, but conversely examination of data from those people with a higher genetic predisposition to drink more coffee seemed to indicate a greater risk of developing the disease.”

Then, the researchers used a standard geostatistical prediction model to evaluate the levels of nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and fine particulate matter at the participants’ residences.

They found 24.5% increased risk of a high coronary artery calcium score for each nitrogen dioxide increase of 20 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3).

“This study may provide evidence that coronary atherosclerosis is a pathological pathway through which air pollution exposure increases risk of death from coronary heart disease,” said  lead author, Meng Wang from University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions in New York.

Wang added, “Atherosclerosis is a lifelong process. As such, the effects of air pollution exposure on atherosclerosis are likely to be chronic.”
